Hiway recognized in national promotions contest
The Hiway Theatre held a special event, Delicious Dishes, on August 7, 2009 in conjunction with the release of the movie Julie & Julia. The event was recently recognized by Sony Pictures and IME/ShowTime as one of the ten best movie theater promotions in the nation.
The Hiway ran an interactive event that featured two components: the compilation of a community cook book and a reception featuring foods from local restaurants as a pre-show celebration. The lobby was decorated and staff wore aprons and chef’s hats as a finishing touch to the festivities. The cook book, Delicious Dishes-The Hiway Theatre Cook Book, received attention from the local press.
There were 122 attendees at the reception, which was held from 5:30PM-7:00PM-the reception ticket included the ticket price to the 7:30PM show of Julie & Julia that night.
Of the ten theaters receiving recognition, the Hiway was the only theater from Pennsylvania.

Welcome our new General Manager: Alison Silverman
Hiway Theatre adds new position; installs new officers
The Hiway Theatre has added a senior management staff with the creation of a General Manager position. Alison Silverman, a 25 year+ veteran of both for profit and non profit movie theatres, is the new General Manager and will not only oversee the theatre operations but contribute to the administration of the Hiway’s office along with current Executive Director Fred Kaplan-Mayer.
“It is rare to get someone with a talent for the nuts and bolts of running the shows and also with the savvy and entrepreneurial sense to help grow a theatre’s audience and programming,” Kaplan-Mayer exclaimed, “…Alison has both of these qualities and has been successful at every phase of her career.”
Alison is no stranger to the Hiway-she briefly worked for the theatre in the 80′s, then under management by Fox Brothers Theater Group-and spent a large part of her career as a key staff member of the Ritz Theatre Group.
The Hiway Theatre is a member supported non profit theatre and this staff restructuring is part of the new strategic plan that looks to increase memberships and expand programming in the next five years.
New Officers: The Hiway Theatre currently has a 16 member board of directors that meets six times a year. Jonathan Wilt was installed as the new Board President of The Hiway Theatre at the March board meeting. Also, installed as board members this past year were Richard Gaglianese, CPA; Kathleen Roberts, V.P., Human Resources, Independence Blue Cross; Iris Parker, Vice Principal, School District of Cheltenham Township; and John Toner, President, Renew Theaters.
