Landmark sign to return to Jenkintown’s Hiway Theatre

Once a local landmark, a neon tower bearing the word “HIWAY” on the Hiway Theatre in Jenkintown was taken down in the mid-1980s.

A new neon tower, identical to the original, will be put in its place later this year after the theater, at 212 York Road, was able to procure funding for it from a wide array of sources.

“It means a lot because it’s evidence of community support, which is why the Hiway is here after 100 years,” said Fred Kaplan-Mayer, the theater’s executive director since 2007.

The original neon tower stood about 20 feet tall over the façade of the theater, which was established in 1913 and has been a nonprofit organization since 2003.

Approximately $45,000 to $47,000 will be used to build and install the tower. Grant money from the state, county, Jenkintown Borough and contributions from private donors comprised most of the budget for the project, which coincides with the borough’s effort to renovate the streetscape along York Road.

“Besides the fact that we get the opportunity to restore the Hiway’s beloved neon tower,” Kaplan-Mayer said, “I couldn’t be more pleased that we can support the borough’s streetscape efforts by essentially installing Jenkintown’s southern gateway element. It may spell ‘HIWAY,’ but it really says ‘welcome,’ in my eyes.”

The theatre will announce a date for a lighting ceremony when the date of completion for the installation is confirmed, which is expected to be before the end of the year.

“It’s been great for me because I grew up in Warminster, and Jenkintown was the big city to me growing up,” Kaplan-Mayer said. “We’re glad to be able to give back to the community that’s giving to us.”
